Day 272: Breakfast With a View

Akaroa – Mount Cook, New Zealand

We parked our campervan on a site by the sea where we thought was legal for camping. Only in the morning did we find out that there’s a clear no-camping sign. We survived the night free-camping without getting a fine and without freezing our arses off. New Zealand at this time of the year gets to around 3 degree Celcius at night. Our van’s heater only work if we’re plugged into electric source on proper powered campground.

When preparing our breakfast, we heard a loud thud on the backside of our van. A car with a trailer accidentally backed into the rear platform. It was fortunate that we had paid for the full insurance or else this would have been problematic. We didn’t get too wound up about this at all and had ourselves a huge breakfast with an awesome view.

After checking out the little town of Akaroa, we started moving south towards our yet undetermined next destination. I got to drive this time around. It was a shaky start for me to get used to the stick shift again and to the big heavy van. I guess driving a car is pretty much like riding a bicycle or swimming: you don’t really forget once you learnt it, you just get rusty. Two hours into the drive, we finally decided that we’d be going inland to Mount Cook area. By the time we reached that region, the sun had begun to set. We pulled over to a parking lot by a lake and called it a day.
