Day 271: The Kiwi Way

Christchurch – Akaroa, New Zealand

I woke up in the morning thinking I’d just stay another day in Christchurch relaxing and planning out my next move. Unfortunately, my hostel was fully booked and I had to relocate.

During breakfast, I gave the Gumtree German girl, Hanna, a call. The thought was to just stay at whichever hostel she’s staying at so I would get to meet her and we could discuss the campervan ride share. Hanna told me instead that she was leaving her hostel today and planned to rent a car on her own and start travelling. I made a quick decision to just meet her up in the town center within the next two hours and if we didn’t dislike each other at first impression, perhaps we could share a campervan together after all.

That’s pretty much what happened afterwards. By 4pm, we’re on a full-size campervan (kitchen, toilet and shower included) off towards the eastern coastal town Akaroa. I had not driven a manual transmission car for more than 10 years so Hanna was driving the whole way through the winding mountain road. The landscape in New Zealand is indeed amazing. It reminded me of the southern part of South America. This probably is logical because the two places are after all in the similar longitude.

In the evening, we invited Hanna’s friend in Akaroa, Larissa, to our camp-artment, where we cooked dinner, ate and chatted away the rest of the evening.

By the way, I got all confused with the word “Kiwi”. It refers to the fruit, the bird and New Zealanders…
