Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Kevlafik, Iceland – New York City, USA
This leg of the trip came to an end. I flew home to chart out the next round of the conquest.
When I fly out again, I should be flying out with the OneWorld Award ticket. OneWorld is an alliance of 10 major airlines, specializing in multi-destination/round-theworld trip tickets.
Earlier this year, I was talking to travel agents in the UK regarding this sort of tickets. I was quoted some USD $6,000 for around 10 flights. Luckily, Richard, my future travel partner, bumped into this article in Gizmodo “How to Travel Around World for $418“. Needless to say, we both went ahead and tried the travel-hacking. It definitely wasn’t easy. As a matter of fact, it’s insanely complicated.
The attempt has thus far, gotten me:
- Massive headache
- Mileage balance on American Airline of 141,729 points
- Ability to fly OneWorld Award flights of 35,000 miles, 16 segments for free (I’ll only have to pay for tax and fuel surcharge)
And with this , technically, I should be able to fly this route for close to being free:
- New York City, USA – Guayaguil, Ecuador
- Guayaquil, Ecuador – Lima, Peru
- Lima, Peru – Easter Island, Chile
- Easter Island, Chile – Santiago, Chile
- Santiago, Chile – Auckland, New Zealand
- Auckland, New Zealand – Sydney, Australia
- Sydney, Australia – Jakarta, Indonesia
- Jakarta, Indonesia – Tokyo, Japan
- Tokyo, Japan – Seoul, South Korea
- Seoul, South Korea – Hong Kong, China
- Hong Kong, China overlanding to Mumbai, India
- Mumbai, India – Amman, Jordan
- Amman, Jordan – Istanbul, Turkey
- Istanbul, Turkey – London, UK
- London, UK – Bermuda, Carribean
- Bermuda, Carribean – New York City, USA
I plan to book these flights come mid November. You folks can find out whether I succeed my travel-hacking experiment in mid December when I’m flying out to Ecuador :]
Meanwhile… the blog will go on hiatus once again while I’m home.
Peace out!
