Day 18: Midnight Sun

Vela Luka, Croatia

I’ve done my fair share of weird stuffs in my life but this is weirder still. As I’m writing this right now, I’m sitting on an unlit pathway by the cliff, watching a local prom party across the opposite side of the bay. It’s me on one side, in near darkness except for the moonlight, versus some hundreds if not thousand of kids, in a grand hotel with blazing lights and blasting music.

It doesn’t help that when I was walking down the half-hour pathway, I was holding my camera on a tripod in such a way that my shadow looked like I was marching with a shotgun. My plan was to actually try to crash the prom and take some pictures. It would be an interesting topic and “cultural study.” Mikey and Sean had already headed there earlier but for a totally different reason: teenage girls :)

Anyway, I never made it to the hotel. I reached the opposite bay, saw the hotel, and I stopped and started setting up for some shots. Next thing I knew, I’ve been here for close to two hours, sitting, watching the view and listening to the DJ, the live bands and the kids’ noise and whatnot. One part of me feel like a loser, the other, a lucky bastard. It’s moments like this that I’d have never in a million years imagined myself doing and definitely one that I’ll look back and treasure.

Here are some pics and a song to share with you folks back home:

Croatian phrase of the day:

Drago mi je = Nice to meet you
