Christchurch, New Zealand – Sydney, Australia – Jakarta, Indonesia
My alarm set off at 4am. I packed my sleeping bag and went to check in for my flight to Sydney.
By 8am Australian time, I was at Sydney airport, with 5 hours to kill before boarding my next 7-hour flight to Jakarta, Indonesia. Originally, I had planned to connect to another flight from Jakarta to my hometown Medan. I thought I might just as well tough it all out but the timing wasn’t possible.
Sydney airport offered free wifi so I actually did enjoy my 5 hour transit time. I needed my Internet fix badly. I managed to update four-day worth of entries for my blog. The only reason I was able to do so was because the entries were pre-written and photos pre-sorted. It’s all very time consuming. Made me wonder how I’d been able to pull it off until now (granted that I totally missed my entries in Australia).
I was so giddy a few days ago knowing that I’d be back in Indonesia soon but I was weirdly calm during the flight. I was probably too tired to get excited.
One of my closest friends from highschool, Merry, picked me up at the airport. Merry had not changed much from the last time I saw her five years ago. Her first comment on me was that I was really tanned. Close to a year of travelling probably hadn’t done much good on my appearance. Every time I arrived in big cities meeting people I know, I got self conscious on my look. I felt like a proper mess, with my beat up trekking shoes and my torn and poorly mended shirt and pants.
From the airport, we went straight to a seafood restaurant where we met up with Merry’s friend Judy. Boy oh boy, spicy Indonesian seafood dishes! I think I may finally be rid of my Vegemite addiction (I did, however, bring a tube of it with me in case I need to ween myself off it).
