Day 148: Death Cab for Cutie (I Know…We Aren’t Exactly Cute)

Guayaquil, Ecuador

Richard and I decided to stay the full day today in Guayaquil to pretty much gather information and get our feet wet in Ecuador.

After a bit of socializing during breakfast at the hostal, we knew at least what we could do for the day. Our hostel is rather far away and the only way to get into the city center is via a bus or a taxi. Since it’s the New Year’s day, buses aren’t running. We hailed a cab instead, hooping we didn’t bump into dodgy “express kidnapper” taxis as we had been warned by two American tourists at the hostel.

We made it to Malecon; It’s a commercial district by the sea. The long promenade led to the Old City of Guayaquil. It was quite a site. Too bad the whole area is quite dead due to the holiday. Shops were close. On our climb up the 444 staircases towards the peak of the Old City, all we saw were locals hanging out on the small alleyways doing what the locals do. We were offered beer by some local gentlemen. Friendly bunch, these folks… I think. Could not understand a word they’re saying… they could have been cursing at us with smiles on their faces. Who knows.

Made it safe back to the hostel at night to find that our room had been rearranged. Turned out that we’re being kicked out of the room to another dorm room. It was lucky for us cos we bumped into two lovely Canadian girls: Madeline and Jacqueline. All four of us jumped into to pool under the rain to cool off. The weather had been really muggy. Good call. Except for the part where I slipped twice going down the wet staircases to our dorm room. Survived with one small cut and  bruise.

Note to self: get a new pair of sandals. Sarah’s old pair won’t do anymore. Traction’s gone.
