Vela Luka, Croatia
I went in to the dive center at 7:30am to find out that I was set to go on boat duties with seven client divers from France. I was psyched! The task was tough however. By the time the boat left shore at 9:00am, we had picked up the divers on the boat, refilled the tank, unloaded all the divers’ gear at the dive center, reloaded the assembled ones to the boat and did the dive briefing.
Between Sean, Deny (the boat captain / Dive Master) and myself, we have carried on and off some eighteen tanks; each weighing about 20 kilograms.
My boat duty included:
- Setting up the anchor
- Staying on the boat while the divers were down in the water, making sure the boat didn’t hit the rock
- Pulling up the divers’ weight belts and BCDs with the tanks on off the water when they finished the dives
- Tying up the boat when we’re back on shores
- Unloading every single item off the boat
And by the end of the day, this was what I ended up with:
The main reason was that I had not the upper body/arm strength to carry tanks and BCDs over onto the boat, so I had to use my shins and knees as supports.
P.S. Allison, I think you were right that I’d have no problem winning a few arm wrestles around the office by the time I got through with this.
Croatian phrase of the day:
Zovem se Elys = My name is Elys
